Hi, I’m Lisa Hostetler.

As a dedicated member of the Vicksburg community, I am excited to announce my candidacy for the Vicksburg Community Schools Board of Education. With a strong passion for education, and a commitment to fostering an environment to improve student outcomes, I am eager to serve and advocate for the best interests of our students, parents, teachers, and community members.

Professional Background

I have been a registered nurse for 38 years having worked most of my career at Ascension Borgess in med/surg, critical care, and in clinical professional development. I received my bachelors degree in nursing from the University of Michigan and my master’s degree from Walden University. Utilizing my masters in nursing education, I was the Regional Onboarding Center manager for nursing and nurse’s aid orientation and onboarding. I performed house wide hospital education as well as training for new orientees. I also created, implemented, and evaluated new curriculums for staff that in turn were utilized in other Ascension hospitals on the east side of the state of Michigan. In addition, I worked as a travel nurse and currently am employed at the Beacon Three Rivers Wound Clinic.

I participated in numerous leadership roles as an RN including: Chairperson for the Heart Failure Inpatient Work Group; co-chairperson for the Cardiac Quality council; Associate Collaborative for Excellence Committee; Borgess Ambassador; Professional Nurse Council Member; and Data Based Nursing Council Chair and member for 24 years.

Finally, I am part owner of Hostetler Custom Homes with my husband Karry Hostetler who has been the owner/CEO for 30 years.

Community Involvement

My commitment to my community extends beyond my professional career. I was very active as a volunteer at my local church and for Milwood Little League for 18 and 11 years respectively. I also held leadership roles in Kalamazoo Public Schools. I was a co-coach for Girls on the Run in 2007. Most of my community involvement has been related to the Kalamazoo Public School System.

Educational Advocacy

Education is the cornerstone of a thriving community. As a parent of 3 children who attended Kalamazoo Public Schools, I have a vested interest in ensuring that our schools provide a high-quality education that prepares our students for future success. I believe that student outcomes are the top priority of the school board. The school board must focus on what students know and are able to do so they can live a choice filled life. Our outcomes are the primary indicator that a school system has been effective. In reviewing the percent of kids at grade level for reading and math, all grades are in need of support. I am dedicated to promoting policies that prioritize academic excellence, mental health support, and equitable access to resources for all students.

I believe my involvement in Kalamazoo Public Schools has prepared me to be a positive change agent of the Vicksburg School Board. I was actively involved in my children's education. While my children were in school, I participated in the following: Parent Teacher Organization President, Vice President, and active member for 14 years; Budget Committee for KPS (2010 and 2018); Spokesperson for KPS House of Representatives K-12 Appropriations Subcommittee (2010); Chairperson for Milwood Elementary Playground Committee (2010-2011, where we planned, designed, and installed a new playground for the elementary school); Parent Advisory Committee with Dr. Michael Rice KPS superintendent for 4 years.

Family

I am married to Karry Hostetler. Together we have five children and three grandchildren. Two of our children graduated from Vicksburg Community Schools and three have graduated from Kalamazoo Public Schools. We are familiar with navigating children through a small community and a bigger community being aware of the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Goals and Vision

If elected to the Vicksburg Community Schools Board of Education, I will focus on the following key areas:

  • Enhancing Academic Achievement:
Implementing innovative and evidence-based educational practices to improve student performance and engagement. I will hold teachers, principals, the superintendent, and ancillary staff accountable for student outcomes.

  • Supporting Teachers and Staff:
I will support ensuring that our educators have the resources, training, and support they need to succeed in their vital roles.

  • Fostering Safe Educational Environments:
I will promote and change policies for a positive school climate where every student feels safe, respected, and valued.

  • Strengthening Community Partnerships:
I will work on building strong relationships between the schools, families, the trades, and local businesses to enhance educational opportunities and community involvement.

I am committed to listening to the voices of our community and working collaboratively to make informed decisions that will benefit our students and schools. Together, we can create a bright future for Vicksburg Community Schools.

I humbly ask for your support and vote in the upcoming election. Let’s work together to ensure every student in our district has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

Thank you,

Lisa Hostetler
